Astronaut Reveals Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
