"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple famous fans have publicly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos repeatedly depict them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"So all is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Nod

The group are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes track departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound resilience called for a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global audience.

But the sister act will forever be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
