Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
